Position:  Community Educator (POP)

Region:  Kitchener-Waterloo & Area

Description:  This position is a result of collaboration between Reception House and Carizon Family and Community Services. A collaborative team will inform and support the initiative. The purpose of this position is to provide training, outreach, and community capacity building activities to enhance the local response to the mental health needs of refugees. The Community Educator will work as a part of the Promise of Partnership project team, to provide psychoeducational workshops and presentations addressing mental health and well-being for newcomers, and how to create a safe community where newcomers experience a sense of belonging. 



RESPONSIBILITIES: 
? Maintain knowledge of current best practices in serving refugees, to ensure that the project activities remain responsive to the needs of clients and community partners. 
? Active involvement in training, outreach, and community capacity building activities to enhance the local response to the mental health needs of refugees. 
? Facilitate psycho-educational groups for GARs and PSRs as required. 
? Work in partnership with staff from Reception House, providing consultation and training as required. 
? Provide information to community partners, sponsors, and familiy members on mental health services available within our community for refugees and newcomers as appropriate.
 ? Collaborate with community social services agencies as appropriate. 
? Promote community capacity building presentations and secure a target number of pesentations as expected 
? Adhere to the ethical standards of a regulated college (when applicable) 
? Develop and facilitate workshops and presentations based on the needs of community partners, family members, or sponsor seekign the information. 
? Conduct research and identify needs for new capacity building presentations and activities related to mental health, well-being and belonging for newcomers. 
? Stay current on program development and design practices to ensure consistent high quality service delivery. 
? Participate in internal and external community committees as assigned. 
? Support the evaluation of program and requirements for continuous quality improvement. 
? Promote a positive and professional image of Carizon. 
? Complete all required documentation in a professional and timely manner. 
? Monitor and Achieve expected service targets 
? Attend monthly supervision with Clinical Manager of Community Services 
? To always perform work safely and in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) 

EDUCATION/KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE: 
? Bachelors Degree or greater in Human Services or Education. 
? Minimum 3-5 years experience. 
? Candidates should possess an extensive knowledge of challenges associated with Government Assisted Refugees and Privately Sponsored Refugees and the systemic barriers refugees confront on a daily basis. 
? Multilingual desired. 
? Previous experience working with refugees. 
? Experience speaking to groups of varying sizes 
? Experience developing, and facilitating education sessions or workshops related to mental health 
? Knowledge of the Immigrant & Settlement services sector 
? Exemplary skills in facilitation.
? Ability to manage time and quality pressures in a fast paced work environment 
? Self -motivated, committed, very organized and sensitive to the needs of clients. 
? This position requires a high level of confidentiality for the protection of the client. 

SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES: 
? Ingenuity or creativity is required to develop presentations and workshops for multiple stakeholders 
? Able to provide education and mentoring to Carizon staff on issues related to refugees and newcomers


Salary:  To be discussed

Terms of Employment:  Contract Part-time (7 months)
